01/14/2014 Business Employment Dynamics Other publication National Private Sector Business Employment Dynamics Data by Major Industry Classification and Business Employment Dynamics Data by States Annual revisions to Business Employment Dynamics series are published with the release of first quarter data. However, revisions to establishment birth and death data were not included in the first quarter 2013 release. These data will be updated with the release of second quarter 2013 data on January 29, 2014. Table 8 of the news release will be updated on January 29, along with the birth and death data at the national industry level and the total private state level data.

08/20/2014 Consumer Price Index Time series The index for electricity for Chicago-Gary-Kenosha, IL-IN-WI, was incorrect as published for June 2014. The average price for electricity per kilowatt hour for Chicago-Gary-Kenosha, IL-IN-WI, was also affected. Several incorrect prices were used in the calculation of the indexes and average prices. The corrected indexes and average prices were corrected on August 19, 2014, and are available in the CPI public databases and on tables 15, 16, 22, and 23 of both the June and July 2014 CPI Detailed Reports.

04/18/2014 Consumer Price Index Time series Consumer Price Index Database The indexes for Utility (piped) gas service for the Size class D and Midwest – Size class D, and Energy services for Midwest- Size class D were incorrect as published for January 2014. The average price for Utility (piped) gas per therm for the Size class D and Midwest – Size class D were also affected. Several incorrect prices were used in the calculation of the January indexes and average prices. The corrected indexes and average prices were corrected on April 15, 2014, and are available in the CPI public databases and are available on tables 12, 13, 19, 20, P2, and 1C in the March 2014 CPI Detailed Report.

05/16/2014 Current Population Survey News release College Enrollment of 1993 High School Graduates This news release was reissued on May 16, 2014, to correct errors in table 2. The numbers in the rows for men and women not enrolled in school with "Less than a bachelor's degree" were incorrect as originally published. Those numbers originally showed only persons with associate's degrees. Persons with some college, no degree have been added to those with associate's degrees and the corrected totals are now listed on the rows labeled "Less than a bachelor's degree."

The correction is a result of an error in unpublished BLS source data on unpaid family worker hours in 2012. 03/24/2014 Spotlight on Statistics Other publication Nonfatal injuries and illnesses among state and local government workers The Spotlight on Statistics published on March 21, 2014, showed an error on the map on slide #2. The national rate of occupational injuries and illnesses among state and local government workers appeared incorrectly as 5.6 cases per 100 full-time workers. The map was corrected on March 24, 2014, to show the national rate of 5.7 cases per 100 full-time workers.

05/28/2014 State and Local Unemployment Rates Time series Local Area Unemployment Statistics Database On May 28, 2014, corrections were made to estimates of civilian labor force and unemployment levels and unemployment rates for all substate areas in Nevada, as well as the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Yuba City, CA–NV Combined Statistical Area, for January 2014 and February 2014. The errors resulted from incorrect information about unemployment insurance claims.

08/15/2013 Beyond the Numbers Other publication The reemergence of the United States as a global petroleum producer A sentence in the section on "Import petroleum prices" originally said, "As a result, Libyan petroleum exports fell from more than 1.5 billion barrels a day before the crisis to 200,000 barrels a day by April." That sentence has been corrected to say 1.5 million barrels a day instead of 1.5 billion.

03/29/2013 Beyond the Numbers Other publication Average food prices: a snapshot of how much has changed over a century In Table 1, the data under the "January 2013" header are correct for all the items except butter. The 3.501 price for butter is for January 2012, not January 2013. In the fourth paragraph the statement "By 2013, prices for coffee, steak (round and sirloin), chuck roast, bacon, and cheese were all significantly higher than butter" was amended as follows: "By 2013, prices for coffee, steak (round and sirloin), chuck roast, bacon, and cheese were all significantly higher than the price of butter (using the January 2012 average price for butter of $3.50 because average price data for January 2013 were not available at the time for publication)."

The numbers in the rows for Central and South Americans and for Other Hispanics were incorrect due to a programming error; some individuals who should have been classified as Other Hispanics were included in the estimates for Central and South Americans. Also, a sentence on page 1, at the end of the second bulleted item, now contains corrected information about Central and South Americans.

The primary errors were in insurance data for private industry. Some additional series were also corrected. The news releases will not be corrected. 02/15/2013 Extended Mass Layoffs Quarterly Time series Mass Layoff Statistics Database Because of a data processing error related to rounding, a small number of historical values for different demographic characteristics, shown as percentages of total private nonfarm mass layoff initial claimants, were incorrectly published in the BLS database. Also, annual totals for 2001 were mistakenly published in the BLS database for three series, even though data for those series were only available for the third and fourth quarters of 2001. 11/01/2013 Import/Export Price Indexes Other publication California: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights (October 2013 edition) The columns in chart 1 were incorrectly labeled and thus appeared to contradict the text that stated (correctly) that computer and electronic product manufacturing was California's largest export in 2012 ($44.8 billion). The third bullet point under "Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing" should have said "lower prices for computer peripherals and communications equipment" (not "higher prices").

12/12/2013 Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities Other publication Miscellaneous Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries data tables Totals for the professional and related occupations category were incorrectly defined in four Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) tables containing historical data: (1) Fatal occupational injuries by selected characteristics, 2003-2012, (2) Fatal occupational injuries incurred by Hispanic or Latino workers, 2008-2012, (3) Fatal occupational injuries incurred by foreign-born workers by selected characteristics, 2008-2012, and (4) Fatal occupational injuries incurred by foreign-born Hispanic or Latino workers, 2008-2012. The 13 data points that were affected have been corrected and are denoted by an asterisk. This problem did not affect any of the CFOI news releases and only affected data prior to 2011 for this occupation.

05/10/2013 Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities Other publication Case and Demographic Characteristics for Work-related Injuries and Illnesses Involving Days of Job Transfer or Restriction In tables DJTR R4 and DJTR R8, the data in the tables did not match the table title descriptions. The data that were presented were for "part of body", while the table titles indicated "event or exposure". The tables were corrected by replacing the "part of body" data and column titles with" event or exposure" data and column titles.

12/11/2013 Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey Other publication Job Opening and Labor Turnover Survey Highlights, October 2013 Chart 4 on the Beveridge Curve and the fourth bullet on the same page incorrectly showed the national unemployment rate for October 2013. The chart and text were corrected to indicate the correct rate of 7.3 percent.

The errors occurred in the calculation of standard errors, resulting in the incorrect designation of changes as statistically significant or not for the following six estimates:

  • The over-the-year change in the job openings rate for the West region was corrected from blank to "YES."
  • The over-the-year change in the job openings level for durable goods manufacturing was corrected from blank to "YES."
  • The over-the-year change in the job openings level for nondurable goods manufacturing was corrected from blank to "YES."
February 2013
  • The over-the-month change in the job openings rate for total nonfarm was corrected from blank to "YES."

03/27/2013 National Longitudinal Surveys News release America's Youth at 25: School Enrollment, Number of Jobs Held and Labor Market Activity: Results from a Longitudinal Survey (HTML) (PDF) This release was reissued on March 22, 2013, to correct data in table 4 for Hispanic or Latino high school graduates, never enrolled in college. The percent of total weeks unemployed while ages 22 to 25, which originally was shown as 68.7 percent, was corrected to say 6.9 percent. This correction to table 4 was made in the PDF version of the release.

On March 22, 2013, tables 1 and 2 were corrected in the HTML version of the release. In table 1, the column for young adults with a bachelor's degree or more incorrectly excluded data from 2010. This entire column has been corrected to include the most recent information from 2010. In table 2 of the HTML version of the release, among high school graduates who had never enrolled in college, the percent of men who were employed civilians, which originally was shown as 81.8 percent, has been corrected to show 81.6 percent; the percent of women serving in the Armed Forces, which originally was shown as 0.5 percent, has been corrected to show 0.7 percent.

The HTML version of this release was reissued on March 27, 2013, to include missing data in table 4. The row for Hispanic or Latino high school graduates who had never enrolled in college, which was incorrectly omitted during the March 22 update, was reinserted with correct data.

03/05/2013 National Longitudinal Surveys News release America's Youth at 25: School Enrollment, Number of Jobs Held and Labor Market Activity: Results from a Longitudinal Survey (HTML) (PDF) This release was reissued on March 5, 2013, to correct data in table 2 for Hispanics or Latinos with a bachelor's degree or more education. The percentage not in the labor force, which originally was shown as 4.7 percent, was corrected to say 10.5 percent.

03/18/2013 National Nonfarm Payroll Statistics (from the Current Employment Statistics Survey) News release Real Earnings — February 2013 (HTML) (PDF) This release was reissued on March 15, 2013, to correct a statement in the text of the release. This statement incorrectly referred to a decrease in the real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees as an increase. The sentence, "The increase was due to a 0.3 percent increase in average hourly earnings being more than offset by a 0.8 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W)," was corrected to say "The decrease was due to a 0.3 percent increase in average hourly earnings being more than offset by a 0.8 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W)."

The value was originally shown as −0.2 hour and was corrected to 0.0 hour on March 8, 2013.

These estimates were removed from the database on December 2, 2013. Revised estimates will not be published because of continuing concerns about their quality.

04/03/2013 State & Metro Area Nonfarm Payroll Statistics (from the Current Employment Statistics - CES Survey) News release Regional and State Unemployment — 2012 Annual Averages (HTML) (PDF) The Regional and State Unemployment — 2012 Annual Averages release was reissued at 10:00 A.M., April 3, 2013, to incorporate minor corrections to employment and labor force estimates for Nebraska and, to an even lesser extent, the six other states in the West North Central division, due to an estimation error. Nebraska's 2011 unemployment rate changed from 4.5 to 4.4 percent, and its 2011 employment-population ratio changed from 68.4 to 68.6 percent. Missouri's 2011 employment-population ratio changed from 59.6 to 59.5 percent. The state employment-population ratio analysis, as well as tables A, 1, and 2, have been modified accordingly.

8/29/2012 State and Local Unemployment Rates Time series Local Area Unemployment Statistics Database Corrections to labor force and unemployment estimates for substate areas in Arizona and North Carolina were published in the BLS database on August 29, 2012. The largest corrections occurred in Apache County in Arizona and the Burlington metropolitan area (equivalent to Alamance County) and Burlington city in North Carolina. Corrections to most other metropolitan areas in Arizona and North Carolina were small. 8/6/2012 State and Local Unemployment Rates Time series Local Area Unemployment Statistics Database Corrections to labor force, employment, and unemployment estimates for numerous substate areas were published in the BLS database on August 1, 2012. These corrections stemmed from data errors for Delaware in January through April 2012 and for West Virginia in January and February 2012. The errors affected data for other states because of the nature of the estimation methodology for the Local Area Unemployment Statistics program. All substate areas in Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey, and some interstate areas shared with the District of Columbia, New York, and Pennsylvania, were affected for the months of January through April 2012. All substate areas in Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia, and the Evansville, Indiana-Kentucky, Metropolitan Statistical Area, were affected for January and February 2012. The error associated with the November 2009 index level data only affected the final indexes for November as issued on April 22; previously-published preliminary estimates for November were correct. 5/3/2010 Producer Price Index Other publication PPI Detailed Report—March 2010 November 2009 Producer Price Index (PPI) data as published in the March 2010 PPI Detailed Report contained errors caused by a data input mistake affecting 56 data series.

The error associated with the November 2009 index level data only affected the final indexes for November as issued on April 22; previously-published preliminary estimates for November were correct. (All PPIs are subject to revision 4 months after original publication to reflect the availability of late reports and corrections by respondents. The error was introduced when revised November data were issued on April 22.) Indexes for all other data series and for months other than November 2009 are correct as published. 3/25/2010 State & Metro Area Nonfarm Payroll Statistics (from the Current Employment Statistics - CES) News release Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment — January 2010 (HTML) (PDF) Within the section of the release titled, "Metropolitan Area Nonfarm Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)", the first sentence of the third paragraph contained an error. A correction was made to the number of metropolitan areas with annual average employment levels above 750,000 in 2009. The correct sentence now reads as follows, "Over the year, nonfarm employment declined in all 36 metropolitan areas with annual average employment levels above 750,000 in 2009."
