Consumer Expenditures Midyear Update

This first midyear update covers 12 months of expenditures from July 2011 through June 2012. During this period, average consumer expenditures increased 1.9 percent compared to the 2011 annual average. Most major components of spending increased.

Average annual expenditures per consumer unit rose 3.3 percent in 2011 following a decrease of 2.0 percent in 2010. All major components of spending increased, with transportation rising 8.0 percent and food increasing by 5.4 percent.
