As the American economy adapts to a changing marketplace and a wider selection of energy alternatives, measuring the number and types of new jobs created is of critical importance. Even if you don’t use any green technologies or practices, please complete and mail back the form. This study will measure both the types of jobs available and the size of the green economy.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) received funding beginning in Fiscal Year 2010 to develop and implement the collection of new data on green jobs. The goal of the BLS green jobs initiative is to develop information on (1) the number of and trend over time in green jobs, (2) the industrial, occupational, and geographic distribution of the jobs, and (3) the wages of the workers in these jobs.
The resulting information will be useful for evaluating policy initiatives and the labor market impact of economic activity related to protecting the environment and conserving natural resources. BLS activities also will be useful to State labor market information offices in their efforts to meet the information needs of policymakers, businesses, and job seekers.
This is an official Federal green jobs survey administered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, part of the U.S. Department of Labor. This survey will create standardized national and census region estimates of green employment and wages.
The results of the 2011 Green Technologies and Practices (GTP) Survey are available at www.bls.gov/gtp. The Bureau of Labor Statistics plans to publish the 2012 Green Technologies and Practices Survey data in summer 2013.

Only report employees who spent more than half of their time involved in researching, developing, maintaining, installing or using technologies or practices to lessen the environmental impact of their establishment, or training workers in these technologies and practices.

Yes. We are interested in the technologies and practices, not the product or service. Green technologies and practices can be found in all industries and establishments regardless of their actual product or service. This survey measures jobs in which workers' duties involve making their establishments' production and/or operation processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources; and these can take place in an establishment that does not produce or provide a green product or service.
Please do not include the use of organic or recycled inputs in your production processes if they were purchased outside of the establishment. Collecting and reusing, recycling, or remanufacturing waste materials created as a result of your establishment’s operations for use within the establishment is included and should be counted in question 5.
Yes. The use of methods, procedures, practices, or technologies that have a positive environmental or natural resource conservation impact should be included, whether they are in place to meet federal or state environmental regulations or to go beyond compliance.
Yes. The government and the not-for-profit sector are in scope of the GTP survey. The only establishments not covered are private households.
