Current Employment Statistics - CES (National)

Notice

Effective with the February 6, 2015 release of January 2015 data, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey transitioned from using X‑12‑ARIMA to X‑13‑ARIMA‑SEATS to produce seasonally adjusted series and forecasts of birth/death residuals. For more information about X‑13‑ARIMA‑SEATS please visit the U.S. Census Bureau website at https://www.census.gov/srd/www/x13as/.

Historical data are not revised to be seasonally adjusted using X‑13‑ARIMA‑SEATS. The CES program has been running parallel seasonal adjustment using X‑13‑ARIMA‑SEATS, and no differences were observed. Examples of the specification files used by X‑13‑ARIMA‑SEATS can be found at www.bls.gov/ces/cesspec.examples.zip.

Notice of Publication Changes with the Release of Data on February 6, 2015

With the release of January 2015 data on February 6, 2015, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program implemented publication changes related to the addition of new series and to the annual sample review.

News Release Table Changes

Effective with the February 6, 2015 release of January 2015 data, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey released two new data series: (1) total nonfarm all employees 3-month average change in thousands; and (2) total private all employees 3-month average change in thousands.

These new series have been added to the Employment Situation Summary Table B. In addition, utilities has been added to the employment series by industry. Hours and earnings data for production and nonsupervisory employees have been removed from this table, but will continue to be available in Employment Situation Tables B-7 (www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t23.htm) and B-8 (www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t24.htm).

UPDATED Sample Summary Table B (PDF)

Historical data for the two new series are now available back to March 1939. Data users can extract these two series from LABSTAT using the following series IDs:

CES0000000026 — Total nonfarm all employees 3-month average over-the-month change, seasonally adjusted
CES0500000026 — Total private all employees 3-month average over-the-month change, seasonally adjusted

Data users can also extract data for utilities using the following series ID:

CES4422000001 — Utilities all employees, seasonally adjusted

Series Changes as a Result of Annual Sample Review

All CES series are evaluated annually for sample size, coverage, and response rates. The following changes result from a re-evaluation of the sample and universe coverage for North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industries. Some small industries no longer have sufficient sample to be estimated and published separately and were combined with other similar industries for estimation and publication purposes.

A list of currently published CES series is available at www.bls.gov/web/empsit/cesseriespub.htm.

Only directly estimated data types are included in the series changes tables: all employees (AE), AE average weekly hours (AE AWH), AE average hourly earnings (AE AHE), AE average weekly overtime hours (AE AWOH), production employees (PE), PE average weekly hours (PE AWH), PE average hourly earnings (PE AHE), PE average weekly overtime hours (PE AWOH), and women employees (WE). Directly estimated data types other than AE are collectively called non-AE data types.

Series with CES Industry Code or Title Changes

Some series have new CES industry codes or titles as a result of the series changes (Table 1). These CES industry code or title changes were applied to all data types published for the designated series. Historical data for these series with new CES industry codes or CES industry titles were impacted as noted on the remainder of this page; historical data are available under the new CES industry codes or CES industry titles.
