In October, the unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent, the highest
since April 1983, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline
(-190,000). The largest job losses over the month were in construction,
manufacturing, and retail trade.

Productivity increased 9.5 percent in the nonfarm business sector during the
third quarter of 2009 as unit labor costs fell 5.2 percent (seasonally
adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 13.6 percent
while unit labor costs fell 7.1 percent.

Nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased at a 9.5-percent annual rate during the third quarter of 2009, the largest gain in productivity since the third quarter of 2003, when it rose 9.7 percent.
